COLOURLOCK Neutral Binder

COLOURLOCK Neutral Binder is used to stabilise rough, brittle and weakened leather surfaces before additional repairs or recolouring. For best results, the damaged area must be properly prepared, and the product should be applied gradually in thin layers.

Step 1 – Assess the Damage

Inspect the leather to determine whether the damage affects only the original colour coating or the underlying leather fibres.

Gently run your hand across the surface in different directions. If the leather feels rough or creates noticeable resistance in one direction, the surface fibres may be damaged and require stabilisation with Neutral Binder.

If the surface remains smooth and only the colour has faded or worn away, COLOURLOCK Leather Fresh may be sufficient without Neutral Binder.

Step 2 – Prepare and Degrease the Surface

Carefully remove grease, oils and other contaminants from the repair area using COLOURLOCK Degreaser.

Important: Avoid applying too much COLOURLOCK Mild or Strong Leather Cleaner directly to exposed, brittle or highly absorbent damaged leather. These areas can absorb excessive moisture, potentially increasing stiffness and worsening the existing deterioration. Conventional leather cleaners should only be used on surrounding areas where the original protective coating remains intact.

Allow the prepared surface to dry completely before proceeding.

Step 3 – Apply Neutral Binder

Apply a small amount of Neutral Binder to a clean application sponge. Carefully spread the product over the damaged area, working in the direction of the leather's fibre structure to help consolidate loose and exposed fibres.

Apply a thin, even layer rather than saturating the surface. For particularly rough or fibrous areas, a suitable brush may be used to work the binder into the damaged fibres.

Neutrak Binder can also be sprayed.

Step 4 – Allow to Dry and Repeat if Necessary

Allow Neutral Binder to dry naturally between applications.

Do not use a hairdryer or direct heat to accelerate drying.

Depending on the severity of the deterioration, several thin applications may be required to gradually stabilise the surface. Repeat until the loose fibres have been sufficiently consolidated and the area feels more uniform.

Step 5 – Smooth the Repaired Surface

Once the Neutral Binder has dried, gently smooth any remaining rough areas using a COLOURLOCK Leather Sanding Pad or Polishing Pad.

Use light pressure and avoid excessive sanding, particularly where the underlying leather has become thin or fragile. - the binding layer can peel.

Additional applications of Neutral Binder and light sanding may be necessary to achieve a sufficiently smooth surface.

Step 6 – Repair Deeper Damage if Required

If deeper cracks, cuts or tears remain after stabilising the surface, these may require additional repair using a suitable COLOURLOCK leather filler or repair system.

Neutral Binder is primarily intended for consolidating damaged surface fibres and should not be relied upon to fill deep cracks, holes or structural tears.

Step 7 – Recolour the Leather

Once the surface has been stabilised and smoothed, recolour the repaired area using COLOURLOCK Leather Fresh or our professional colour system in the appropriate colour.

Apply in thin layers, allowing each application to dry before proceeding. A hairdryer may be used carefully to assist drying of Leather Fresh, following its application instructions.

For larger restoration projects, professional spray-applied leather colour and finishing systems may be more appropriate.

Important Application Notes

• Use on damaged leather fibres: Neutral Binder is most beneficial where the leather surface has become rough, brittle or fibrous rather than simply discoloured.
• Avoid excessive moisture: Do not saturate exposed or deteriorated leather with water-based cleaners.
• Apply in thin layers: Several controlled applications are preferable to one excessively heavy application.
• Allow natural drying: Do not accelerate the drying of Neutral Binder using a hairdryer or direct heat.
• Sand carefully: Excessive sanding can further weaken leather that has already deteriorated.
• Structural damage: Deep tears, holes or weakened leather may require additional repair methods or replacement.
• Long-term preservation: Neutral Binder can help stabilise deterioration, but it cannot reverse ageing or restore severely damaged leather to its original strength.
