Application

Step 1 – Test the Surface

Before application, test Leather Shield & Leather Care on a small, inconspicuous area to ensure compatibility and check for any unwanted changes to the leather's appearance.

Step 2 – Clean the Leather

Remove dirt, body oils and other contaminants using COLOURLOCK Mild or Strong Leather Cleaner, depending on the level of soiling. Wipe away any remaining cleaner residue using a slightly damp cloth and allow the leather to dry completely.

Step 3 – Apply Leather Milk Protector

Shake the bottle well before use. Apply a small amount of Leather Milk Protector to a clean application sponge or soft cloth, then spread evenly across the leather using gentle, overlapping movements.

Work systematically across the surface to achieve consistent coverage, paying particular attention to areas exposed to sunlight, heat and regular use. Apply sparingly and avoid saturating the leather. A thin, even application is generally sufficient.

Step 4 – Allow to Dry

Allow Leather Milk Protector to absorb and dry naturally. Do not polish or buff the surface after application. Avoid unnecessary contact until the leather has dried.

Step 5 – Apply Leather Shield

Lightly moisten a clean, soft cloth with COLOURLOCK Leather Shield. Apply a thin, even layer across the leather, working systematically from seam to seam to ensure consistent coverage.

Pay particular attention to high-contact areas such as seat bolsters, steering wheels, armrests and frequently used furniture surfaces. Avoid excessive application or saturating the leather. One thin application is sufficient for routine protection.

Step 6 – Allow to Dry

Allow Leather Shield to dry naturally. Do not buff or polish the leather after application. Avoid using the treated surface until the product has dried.

You can use a hairdryer to speed the drying process.

Step 7 – Ongoing Maintenance

Leather Shield: For heavily used surfaces, such as driver's seats, bolsters and armrests, repeat treatment approximately every three months. For less frequently contacted surfaces, reapplication every six to twelve months is generally sufficient, depending on use and exposure.

Leather Protector: For regularly used automotive leather and furniture, conditioning approximately every six months is generally recommended. The appropriate frequency will depend on the leather's age, condition, environmental exposure and level of use.

Additional Recommendations (Leather Shield)

  • New leather: Begin applying Leather Shield within the first three years of use to help prevent premature abrasion and dye transfer.
  • Light-coloured leather: Prioritise areas exposed to denim, dark clothing and other materials that may transfer dyes.
  • Older leather: Where conditioning is also required, apply COLOURLOCK Leather Milk Protector first and allow sufficient time for it to absorb before applying Leather Shield. Waiting a day, ideally around 48 hours, is recommended.
  • Professionally recoloured leather: Allow the new coating to cure according to the restoration system's instructions before applying Leather Shield.
  • Regular cleaning: Always remove surface dirt before reapplication to avoid trapping contaminants beneath the protective treatment.

Important: Leather Shield is intended for pigmented and suitably finished semi-aniline leather. Do not apply to porous aniline leather, suede or nubuck. For artificial leather and vinyl, use the appropriate COLOURLOCK Artificial Leather Protector.

Additional Recommendations (Leather Protector)

  • Older leather: Regular conditioning is particularly beneficial for leather that has been in use for several years and is beginning to lose its natural suppleness.
  • Classic vehicles: Pay particular attention to leather exposed to prolonged periods of storage, heat and sunlight.
  • New leather: For leather less than approximately three years old, COLOURLOCK Leather Shield is generally recommended as the primary maintenance product.
  • Combining with Leather Shield: Where both conditioning and friction protection are required, apply Leather Milk Protector first and allow it to absorb thoroughly before applying Leather Shield. Ideally, leave several days between treatments.
  • Very dry or hardened leather: Leather Milk Protector is intended for routine conditioning. Severely hardened leather may require a more intensive treatment using COLOURLOCK Leather Softener Oil.
  • Regular cleaning: Always clean the leather before conditioning to avoid spreading dirt, oils and other contaminants across the surface.

Important: Do not apply Leather Milk Protector excessively or to unsuitable absorbent leather types. Always test on an inconspicuous area first. Conditioning can help maintain flexibility and slow further deterioration, but it cannot reverse structural damage, existing cracks or leather shrinkage.

I’ve used Colourlock repair dyes to breathe new life into the tired leather of a couple of Boxster interiors, and the results have been better than I hoped for both times. Much cheaper than a re-upholster, and achieves a very similar effect for a fraction of the cost. Highly recommended

Very happy customer. Difficult colour matched perfectly with great results, very helpful service, great product and communication. Thank you.

The guys provided top service, and I really appreciate the time they took to run me through the aftercare process and show me the kind of products I should be using in the future. Love your work, guys!
